At EA, we believe games are powerful because they bring together multiple ways people engage: play, watch, create, and connect. And increasingly, the biggest entertainment platforms aren't just places to consume content — they're places where communities build.
Creator-made content is already a proven part of EA's history — from community creation tools in Battlefield to The Gallery in The Sims 4. We believe new creative technologies and tools will expand how players engage with and contribute to our experiences, supported by thoughtful product design, safety systems, and global reach. Our focus is on enabling more players to participate in creative expression by making creation easier, safer, and more rewarding.
As a Senior Character Artist on the Research & Engineering team you will partner closely with Art Direction and help define the project's visual identity, characters, and stylistic direction. You will lead the creation of visually distinctive, real-time character assets and modular parts for early playable demos, prototypes, and high-fidelity vertical slices. You will bring extensive AAA game development experience and a deep understanding of anatomy, proportion, and shape language. You will set production standards, establish scalable character pipelines, and provide valuable mentorship as the character art discipline grows.
This is a hybrid role, onsite three days a week in Redwood City, California, Montreal or Vancouver, Canada.
The Senior Character Artist will report to the Senior Art Director.
Responsibilities:
Create high-quality real-time characters assets that establish and reinforce the project's visual identity.
Help establish the character art quality bar and production standards, provide mentorship and visual feedback, and support future team growth as the discipline scales.
Partner closely with Art Direction to translate visual targets into practical character solutions while preserving intended silhouette, proportion, materials, and style.
Work with Technical Art and Engineering to build scalable character workflows for content that may be handcrafted, adapted, customized, or remixed.
Explore stylization, material response, modularity, customization, and asset variation across different game experiences and visual styles.
Support playable demos and vertical slices by taking hero characters from early look development through polished in-engine presentation.
Collaborate with Animation, VFX, UX, and Environment teams to ensure characters read clearly and feel cohesive within the broader game experience.
Support reviews of internal and external character production, ensuring work consistently meets the established visual and technical quality bar.
Qualifications:
Demonstrated expertise in AAA game development (8+ years) with shipped titles on console or PC.
Strong portfolio showing high-quality real-time character work, including stylized and/or visually distinctive characters.
Experience mentoring artists, leading art reviews, and providing craft direction.
Advanced knowledge of character modeling, sculpting, topology, texturing, materials, and real-time optimization.
Experience with standard character tools such as Maya, Blender, ZBrush, Substance 3D, Marvelous Designer, or comparable software.
Experience working in Unreal, Unity, Frostbite, or another modern proprietary engine.
Excellent understanding of anatomy, proportion, silhouette, shape language, color, and material definition.
Comfort working cross-functionally with Art Direction, Technical Art, Animation, Design, and Engineering.
Experience with modular characters, customization systems, procedural workflows, or AI-assisted content creation.
Provide a portfolio, demo reel, or examples of accomplished character artwork.
